About Guy
Aloha,
My name is Guy Takayama. While growing up in a surfing family where the sport of surfing and the designing and shaping of surfboards were contagious I could not help but to follow this lifestyle. My father Raymond started surfing and shaping surfboards in the late forties-early fifties in Hawaii and continued through the sixties after moving to California. My uncle Donald shaped for Velzy, as well as other world re-known surfboard manufacturers and has continued on to become a world re-known surfboard shaper himself and five time U.S. Surfing Champion.
My interest in surfing and wanting to get on a board myself started at a very young age while watching my uncle Donald competing at the Huntington Beach U. S. Surfing Championships during the late 60’s. I remember standing on the crowded pier hanging through the cross bars while my dad Raymond was holding onto the back of my shirt so I wouldn’t fall through as I was cheering my uncle on as he would pass under me shooting the pier while wearing his competition jersey and bright orange helmet. After watching all of this excitement I knew I wanted to surf. I stepped on my first surfboard at age five with my father on one side and my uncle on the other. I was hooked. I began competing in the late 70’s and started shaping boards with some of my friends just for fun in someone’s garage. After all, I had grown up watching my father and uncle surfing, designing and shaping boards for my entire life. It was a natural progression to follow in the family tradition and lifestyle.
Now four decades later I have truly embraced the Surfing lifestyle with two thirds of those years being in competitions around the world surfing on short and longboards as well as the exciting sport of Tandem surfing, and now two decades in designing, shaping and manufacturing surfboards and fins.
Welcome to the new generation of surfing, where technology reigns. You have entered the world of Hapa Ohana, where design, performance, aesthetics and formal schooling all come together to create a unique line of surfing products. Utilizing my years of surfing experience and my education in bio-mechanics and physics, I have created our line of surfboards for performance and maneuverability that flows not only with the ocean wave but also with the natural movement of the human body. Each surfboard I design is a unique high performing piece of artwork. In addition, my physics background also helped me develop a line of fins which are functional, aesthetically beautiful and very different from the average fin. ALL Guy Takayama Surfboards are designed and shaped by me. I do not employ ghost shapers or rely on the cookie cutter methods for production. I am able to create a surfboard that will surpass even the most demanding surfer’s needs. Just one look at my products and you will see the difference. Using the highest quality materials, today’s technologies with resin tints and opaques, hot coat or resin pinlines and unique G T fins make my boards stand out above the rest.
